The capital of the Netherlands is the city of 1200 bridges. It has beautiful canals and is home to the royal palace in its old town. Running in Amsterdam also means visiting its red light district and admiring its flowery shops.
In the heart of Amsterdam lies the De Wallen district, also known as the red light district. It is the oldest part of the city. Developed around a concentric network of interconnected semicircular canals, it draws a spider's web. On the periphery is the Grachtengordel, or canal belt. The houses, with their different architectural styles despite their similar dimensions, bear witness to the prosperity of the 17th century, known as the 'Dutch Golden Age'. The city is a real paradise for bicycles, and in 2021 the municipality created several fully pedestrianised zones. Visitors can walk gazing upwards, admiring the historical monuments that dot the city. Among the most famous are the old Beguinage, the Mint Tower and the statue of Anne Frank. Anne Frank wrote her famous diary in a house in Amsterdam, which has become the most visited museum in the capital in her honour.
